Top Tips on How to Avoid Seasickness

Going on a cruise trip, but afraid of seasickness? You aren't alone. Here are a few tips to overcome seasickness.

Book a Cabin in the Ship's Center

The more you find a stable place in the ship, the more you can avoid the motion. The rear part, upper decks, or the ship's sides experience more movement as it navigates through the water. Thus, try to book a cabin in the center or near the base where the gliding motion nullifies.

Spend maximum time on the open deck
Being crammed inside the cabin can worsen your sickness if you can't get any sleep. More movement and small places can increase your anxiety and upset your stomach. To avoid the uneasiness, try spending time on the open deck, exposed to the air. You can just watch the sea and horizon or listen to some songs to engage yourself.

Switch Alcohol With Carbonated Drinks

Alcohol, smoothies, or thick shakes can increase the vomiting sensation than help you control it. Instead, try having carbonated soft drinks, mint-infused mocktails, or flavored water to soothe yourself. The soda in these drinks can control the acidity and help in quicker and better digestion.

Eat a non-spicy and less oily diet
Belching and vomiting sensation is most common in seasickness. Spicy, greasy, and salty foods can only aggravate these issues and upset our stomachs. A heavy, calorie-dense diet can also be difficult to digest, which results in regurgitation due to constant motion. Thus, try to have bland and easy-to-digest foods onboard. You can try rice, noodles, bread, sautéed veggies, or dry crackers.

Try Mints or Flavored Mouth Fresheners!

Extreme sickness can make us uneasy to the extent of avoiding food. But if you aren't aware, an empty stomach churns the acid inside and even worsens the feeling of nausea. If you constantly feel vomiting whenever you eat, try mint or ginger candies to curb that sensation. Mint gummies or sour candies are the best to chew on to keep yourself hydrated and suppress stomach uneasiness.

Talk and socialize with other travelers
If you feel uneasy because of the ship's rocking motion, focusing on a single thing can worsen it more. Reading a book, watching the mobile screen for long, or sitting with your eyes closed can only confuse your brain more, as it can't balance concentrating on a particular thing amid the movements.
Avoid sticking to one thing for long and distract yourself around. Spend time socializing with other travelers or have a stroll on the deck to synchronize yourself with the movements.
